The In-Between Season: Harvesting Heat, Preparing for Garlic

This morning started at 45 degrees. I dressed for the coming heat of the day, but the early chill still clung to the air as I slipped into the greenhouse. The bark chip pile was steaming, a sure sign that the shift of the season is underway. Summer isn’t quite gone, but fall is waiting just around the corner.

It’s a funny in-between time here at Bray Gardens. We’ll still be harvesting hot peppers from the greenhouse for a couple more months, savoring their heat while we can. At the same time, our fields are being prepared for the late-fall garlic planting — the crop that anchors our farm year after year.

Potatoes and garlic are curing in the bins, the pantry shelves are filling, and the mornings carry that unmistakable crispness. Soon, the days will shorten, the air will cool, and the full rhythm of fall will settle in.

We love these transition weeks — a blend of endings and beginnings, of warmth and chill, of abundance and preparation. They remind us that farming is always about cycles: planting, tending, harvesting, and dreaming ahead.

Here’s to the in-between season, where both summer and fall meet on the plate.
